Overview

The RS-25 liquid propulsion rocket engine is a key part of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) for space exploration beyond low-earth orbit. The RS-25 Lox-Hydrogen engine, with its wide throttling control and high performance, has over 30 years of rich and successful history of use in the Space Shuttle Main propulsion System. Aerojet Rocketdyne is the premier supplier of multiple liquid propellant rocket engines used in vehicles for multiple customers. Among the key engine components are the sensors which enable monitoring of operating parameters, closed loop (or other) control, and real-time protection for safe shutdown in the event of hardware malfunction.

 

We are seeking a Summer 2018 Intern who will work in the Electronics Engineering group. This is an excellent opportunity for an intern to support our engineering team in the successful development, qualification, and deployment of instrumentation used in flight RS-25 engines being integrated with the new SLS vehicle. This internship will be located at our facility in Canoga Park, CA (Los Angeles area).

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Under direct supervision, the Intern will have responsibilities in the area of Instrumentation/Electrical engineering support to rocket propulsion programs, including:

 

25% - Support temperature, pressure, speed, vibration and/or position sensor design including trade studies and supplier evaluation.

 

25% - Coordination of activities including hardware fabrication support with other internal organizations such as engineering, manufacturing, quality and test.

 

25% - Perform instrumentation data analysis as required in support of rocket engine hot-fire testing and/or component testing.

 

25% - Presentation of results at internal and external meetings.

Requirements

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Physics.

 

US Citizenship required. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

 

 

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Coursework and knowledge in the following areas: EE fundamentals, semiconductor fundamentals, Physics based problem solving and experimental lab techniques.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Solid academic track record and demonstrated teamwork experience.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate experience in measurement science is desired.
  • Working knowledge of all Microsoft Software applications.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Be a self-starter and have the ability to work with little direction.
  • Leadership skills.

 

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
