We are seeking an Associate Mechanical Design Engineer for our Huntsville, AL location. While this opportunity will be located in Huntsville, there is a possibility of supporting this role at our Sacramento, CA facility for the first 3-6 months.

 

This is an entry-level design engineering position with a focus on component design. Working under the guidance of senior staff, the candidate will support component design of composite pressure vessels, composite overwrap pressure vessels, composite rocket motor cases and composite structures used in propulsion applications.

 

This current opening may be filled at this level as posted or at one level higher.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Under close supervision, the candidate performs entry-level professional engineering assignments following established policies. The position requires some independent professional judgment and application of engineering principles, theories and concepts. The mechanical engineering responsibilities will concentrate on the design of composite propulsion system components and composite structures.

 

50% - Perform basic engineering calculations and preliminary design. Apply general knowledge of composite design, strength of materials, machining and joining processes and non-destructive testing. Develop designs using composite design tools and computer aided design tools. Evaluate feasibility through the application of CAD models and engineering drawings.

 

20% - Coordinate and interact with personnel from other engineering disciplines, manufacturing operations, quality engineering and supply chain.

 

10% - Learn and apply composite design manufacturing methods and processes, as well as associated inspection processes.

 

10% - Support hardware fabrication, testing and evaluation. Support anomalies and failure investigations.

 

10% - Prepare and present technical material to engineering leads and/or small audiences. Generate engineering reports for assigned projects or activities.

Requirements

Requires a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline (Mechanical/Aerospace), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

 

The candidate should have a general engineering/science background (aerospace or mechanical preferred); an understanding and use of analytical, design or process procedures pertinent to the particular field of engineering; knowledge of statistical methods; the ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings and specifications; the ability to communicate clearly and concisely; experience using engineering test equipment, CAD (UG NX8.5 preferred), and/or various computer systems and the ability to operate effectively in a team environment.

 

 

 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stair, scaffolding, ramps), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces), bending, reaching, handling/fingering (seizing, holding, grasping, turning picking, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat.   May also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer. Ability to distinguish colors may also be necessary. Some employees may be required to drive between various locations within the Company facility or between locations. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
