We are seeking an Associate Engineer, Materials Engineering for our Huntsville, AL location.

 

This current opening may be filled at this level as posted or at one level higher.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Under close supervision and following established policies, the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering assignments requiring full use and application of standard engineering principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Provides Materials Engineering discipline support to engineering team lead.

 

45% - Support Design Process: Working under the direction of senior materials and processes (M&P) staff, the non-metallics materials engineer will support product designs by providing material selection recommendations, reviewing design drawings, reviewing manufacturing planning, and supporting Engineering Review Boards; participating in design reviews and customer technical interchange meetings; evaluating suppliers and their materials and processes to ensure they meet requirements.

 

45% - Support Product Development: Working as part of a product development team, the engineer will conduct a variety of materials engineering tasks, such as evaluating outgassing, corrosion resistance, radiation compatibility, fuel compatibility, non-metallic joining techniques; identifying advanced materials; leading development of criteria and establishing standards for experimental, test and/or production purposes; performing laboratory and manufacturing experiments; and interpreting, analyzing, evaluating, and reporting on data and processes. Develop and characterize non-metallic material systems including elastomers, ceramics, polymeric matrix composite materials, ablatives, refractories, and adhesive bonding systems. Interact with both sub-tier suppliers and customers on technical matters.

 

10% - Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Material Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or similar discipline (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). Strong analytical and communication skills (written and oral) are required, along with the ability to work in a collaborative team environment. Candidate must be experienced using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This position requires the ability to read, interpret, prepare and issue drawings and related specifications, as well as the ability to use test and other measurement equipment. Six Sigma knowledge and experience in the aerospace industry are desired.

 

US Citizenship required. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

 

 

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

Employee may need to work near moving mechanical parts and in loud working conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes, chemicals or airborne particles. Laboratory work will also be required to evaluate materials and failure analysis.
