Overview

Aerojet Rocketdyne is seeking a Systems Performance Analysis Intern for summer 2018 to join our facility in Canoga Park, CA (Los Angeles area).

 

The Systems Performance Analysis (SPA) department within the Systems Engineering department group supports a complete line of booster and upper stage propulsion systems, focused on safely and reliably launching: (1) expendable space exploration or low-earth orbit, rendezvous vehicles, (2) missile defense upper stage vehicles, and (3) advanced hypersonic vehicles. Current government/commercial vehicles and associated propulsion systems being developed or supported at AR are for example: the NASA/MSFC SLS (Space Launch System) and the man-rated RS-25 and RL-10 engine, Air Force/Atlas-V payload vehicle and an AR1 booster engine, Boeing Upper Stage and CCtCAP man-rated engine, and the Air Force GBI (Ground-Based Interceptor) upper stage and RKV (Redesign Kill Vehicle) engine.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

The SPA intern will support senior engineers in the performance of technical production or development program related tasks. Work assignments will support various system analysis activities:

 

40% - Perform steady-state system performance test data analyses of production liquid rocket engine systems and/or steady-state optimization trade studies of development pump-fed liquid rockets.

 

40% - Perform transient (fluid dynamics/heat transfer/control) model data analyses of production (and possibly development) liquid rocket engine systems and/or transient model analyses to define robust start, throttle and shutdown valve sequences of development liquid rocket systems.

 

20% - Additional duties will include supporting the refinement of existing math models of liquid rocket engines and/or clean energy power plants.

Requirements

Candidates must be actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline (Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil) or related major and have completed junior year of study OR enrolled in an Master's Engineering program (Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil or related emphasis).

 

Additional Requirements:

  • US Citizenship Only Required. Dual Citizenship does not meet job qualifications.
  • Solid written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Strong foundations in physics and math required.
  • Candidate must be self-motivated, have good attention to detail and have teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Programming skills (languages such as FORTRAN, C and/or MATLAB) a plus.
  • Skills in using standard MS Office tool suite on the Windows operating system.

 

 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit and to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 15 pounds; may require minimal walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
